The water displacement produced by the immersion of the animal paw in the measuring tube is reflected into the second tube, inducing a change in the conductance between the two platinum electrodes. The Plethysmometer Control Unit detects the conductance changes and generates an output signal to the digital display indicating the volume displacement measured (0.01 ml resolution). The current value remains in the digital display until a new trial starts. The Control Unit is automatically zeroed between successive readings, thus making intermediate adjustments unnecessary.

The system includes as standard a volume transducer with its related calibrator and a 100 ml solution. A remote foot-switch allowing rapid hands-free experiments can be used to set control the end point of the measurement. SeDaCom software supplied with the unit can be used to automatically record the results on a PC through a RS-232 port.

The first device designed specifically to measure paw swelling in rodents. More than 1000 bibliographic citations since 1960s! In research on rheumatoid arthritis, the central development of oedema, and its modifications by pharmacological processes, it has proved of great value to measure inflammatory oedema in the rat and mouse paw. The 37140 Plethysmometer displays the exact paw volume on the graphic LCD display, with 0.01ml resolution. The 37140 is provided with a pedal holding-command which freezes the reading, enabling the operator con concentrate its attention to the paw dipping. A zero key is provided to zero the meter before each measurement. Communication with the PC is managed by the dedicated Software 52050-02, included as standard

The new Plethysmometer is a micro-controlled volume meter, specially designed for accurate measurement of the rat/mouse paw swelling. It consists of a water filled Perspex cell (several diams. are available for either rats or mice) into which the paw is dipped. A transducer of original design records small differences in water level, caused by volume displacement. The digital read-out shows the exact volume of the paw.

The instruments features direct connection to PC via the optional WinDAS software package. The optional Mini-Printer 7145 enables the print-out of the experimental data.
